BMW M5It's over 20 years since the first BMW M5 ultimate saloon was launched and now they are ready to release a new M5 at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show. BMW has stuck to what it does best with the new M5 model by providing discreet but classy looks and a powerful engine which works well for BMW. The old 5.0 litre V10 that produced 500bhp has made way for a smaller V8 which now has two turbo’s which increases the power to an incredible 560bhp. By losing two cylinders BMW have also increased the fuel economy figures and managed to lower CO2 emissions. No official word on the figures as yet, but with BMW’s stop start system the new M5 will return more than the previous model of 19mpg and emit less than 255g/km of CO2. However, the extra low down torque offered by the turbo’s will make the M5 much more practical on a day to day basis. The new engine will be fitted to a seven speed gearbox with a dual clutch which will deliver faster gear changes that are smoother and less jerky when in auto.

Although the styling of the new BMW M5 is quite subtle there is a look of aggression with such details as the 3 honeycomb air inlets that sit below the front grille, while at the rear of the M5 is a neat diffuser, thin boot lid spoiler and two twin exhausts which announce it as the flagship of the range. One of the features on the BMW that clearly indicates the potential of the M5 are the set of 20 inch alloy wheels that sit flush in the arches that flare out. The suspension Refined by BMW M Division, after testing at Germany’s famous Nürburgring will guarantee sharp crisp handling and the rear uses BMW’s active M Diff which helps stop loss of traction in testing conditions. The rear axle uses an ‘Active M’ differential to prevent loss of traction in slippery conditions and also when accelerating. The production model will make its appearance at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show and reports say the BMW M5 should be virtually unchanged. The M5 hits the showrooms in November 2011 with prices starting from £65,000.
