The Audi A3 Saloon concept was previewed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The saloon body will add to the popular A3 model range giving this popular Audi a greater buyer’s audience
The Audi A3 range will now consist of a Audi A3 three door hatch, Audi A3 five door Sportback, Audi A3 Cabriolet and a Audi A3 Saloon when the new Audi A3 makes its debut next year. Audi are hoping to exploit the growing demand in China and Russia for western cars and they also estimate sales of 3,000 or so models for the UK. Rumors are circulating too about the possibility of an Audi A3 Avant Estate which will be based on the longer Audi A3 saloon.
The new A3 Saloon features Audi’s new larger grille which sets the front of the car off and with the creases along the shoulder line of the car it really helps give it an aggressive sporty look. The Concept A3 Saloon features frameless doors but don’t expect these to make it into production though. The rear of the A3 Saloon features LED lights and a twin exhaust that finishes of the rear of the car as they match each other perfectly. The Audi A3 Saloon concept development engineer Matthias Seer said "We started work on the concept around the time of the Paris Motor Show and it has gone pretty much to schedule." "It shows the A3's new design language, which is much sharper than before."
Audi has tried to keep the A3 saloon as light as possible using materials like aluminium and reinforced carbon fibre plastic. These exotic materials have been used everywhere from the air intakes to the 20 inch alloy wheels, the use of these result in a kerbweight of 1,540kg. The concept Audi A3 Saloon has been fitted with the same 2.5 litre engine found in the Audi RS3 which has been boosted to 402bhp and can achieve a 0-62mph time of 4.1secs and a limited top speed of 155mph. It also features Audi’s four wheel drive Quattro system with a seven speed twin clutch S Tronic gearbox and Audi launch control system.
Inside the Audi A3 Saloon the dashboard takes on a minimalistic layout thanks to Audi’s MMI interface. This will allow the driver to control various in car settings using a touchpad which also has Internet connectivity. This inspiration has been taken from the Audi A6, so expect a major step up in quality and comfort. The Audi A3 Saloon concept is slightly smaller than an Audi A4, but at 2.63 metre’s long there should be plenty of legroom for the rear passengers. The finished production model will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011 but as the hatchback version first, sales will start in the UK in spring 2012.
