The Alfa Romeo 169 heralds a new direction for the firm’s new in-house styling team at the company’s headquarters in Milan. While the Alfa 169 grill has not changed much and is still part of the Alfa family, but the new rear is definitely a step in a new direction while the overall exterior takes inspiration from four-door coupes such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Audi A5 sportback. You can even see the Maserati Quattroporte in the design. The new Alfa Romeo 169 will go up against the BMW 5 series and Jaguar XJ. In order to achieve this and also compete with the established manufacturers Alfa has decided to make the Alfa 169 rear wheel drive to ensure a better driving experience. Alfa could use the next Chrysler 300C platform which is a slightly shortened version of the Quattroporte's underpinnings, this will help save both companies piles of cash, by stretching their resources across a number of brands. Engine choices are likely to include all-new petrol and diesel V6's. Rumours have started that even the 450bhp 4.7-litre V8 from the 8C Competizione sports car could find its way into a range-topping Alfa 169 GTA. Alfa hopes the 169 GTA will give the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG something to think about. Originally the Alfa 169 previewed as a concept at the Geneva Motor show way back in 2004, the Alfa Romeo 169 was earmarked for a 2009 debut. But due to the economic crisis it's been delayed, and now Alfa Romeo hopes to release it sometime in late 2011.
